Kaye Brown

Majored in English
Owensboro Community and Technical College, Class of 1994
From Maceo, KY
My name is Kaye Brown and for the past twenty-five years I have taught English classes at Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC). In addition to teaching English 101 and English 102 classes, I also enjoy teaching Humanities 135, Introduction to Native American Literature, and Humanities 160, Introduction to Holocaust Literature and Film. Students hoping to find me on campus should visit the Teaching and Learning Center (LRC or library building) and find Room 218. Of course, sending me an email at kaye.brown@kctcs.edu works well too. On a personal note, I married my sweetheart over thirty years ago and never regretted the decision. We have three lovely children, one fine nephew, some chickens--no names in case they become food, and a spoiled teeny tiny Chihuahua. After attending Murray State University and graduating from the University of Texas at El Paso, our family lived the military life for ten years and lived all over the United States. During our travels, I worked as a waitress, a courier, a newspaper delivery expert, a freelance writer, and a caterer. We returned to our home town in the 1990s; I earned my M.A. from Western Kentucky University and began teaching at OCTC soon after. Over the past ten years, I have been so fortunate to be part of the executive team for the OCTC Common Reading project. The program has hosted some great writers: Appalachian author, Silas House, Native American writer, Sherman Alexie, Rick Bragg, Southern iconic writer, and many others. Aside from arranging for author's visits, I have been instrumental in bringing Civil War and Native American re-enactors to campus, and introducing Indian customs, like bindis, and costumes, like saris, to OCTC students. Learning from books and the classroom are time-honored traditional tools, but stepping outside the classroom to see how student-life and real life connect completes the circle for me, and hopefully for students here.
