Participants began the session by sharing how they show respect and how respect has been shown to them in social and personal settings. Keeping that engagement in mind, we then learned about the Andover Bread Loaf Family Literacy Night Model. Following a review of the FLN rules, grounded in the work of Paulo Freire, students completed a family literacy night session. After completing the family literacy night writing prompts, open mic, and blues listening session, students dialogued about how family literacy night supports antibias education and creates emotionally and socially safe spaces in schools for young people. Students further discussed how family literacy night can be used as a transformative practice to disrupt bias, prejudice, and racism in school settings. The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Lillian Reeves and attended by Dr. LeNessa Clark, Dr. Deborah McMurtrie, and Dr. Judy Collazo.Spring 2019
