I have three core values: Independence, Integrity, and Creativity. Independence: 'Avant-Garde' is a french term that was originally used to describe the military vanguard. It was made popular through its association with the modernist art movement. The movement was so named for the tendency of modern artists to challenge the status quo and drive societal change with their innovative and wildly provocative techniques. When DuChamp exhibited a signed urinal in 1917 titled 'Fountain', many were outraged, but few could deny that he had effectively pushed the art world to question what art can be. Independent of your desire (or lack thereof) to hang an autographed urinal in your living room, the verve demonstrated by DuChamp proves his individuality. His devotion to be himself unapologetically, to question his environment, and to act in accordance with his beliefs drove him to risk personal failure and inspire me. Integrity: "Courage and confidence are practical necessities... courage is the practical form of being true to existence, of being true to truth, and confidence is the practical form of being true to ones own consciousness." - Ayn Rand on Integrity Creativity: There is no work more difficult, more necessary, or more rewarding than the work done for the sake of an original idea. Creativity is a somewhat redundant value, when coupled with integrity and independence, but it is my most treasured.
