Redefining Masculinity in One Night Stands: A Rhetorical Analysis of Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” in Modern Society
This paper discusses the changing conception of masculinity in a cultural context, specifically when it comes to one night stands. Beginning with the historical context and origin of the stereotype, it takes a critical look at how the traditional view of masculinity plays a role in the ever-changing modernity of uncommitted sexual relationships, among them, the one night stand. These views are then analyzed in the popular song by Sam Smith “Stay With Me,” using both the lyrics and music video to highlight the stereotype of stoic and unfeeling masculinity in one night stands, where such encounters are perceived to be solely sexual. This paper also analyzes the need for a new definition of masculinity in society and advances this new possible definition.
