Resident Assistant at Piedmont Central
Being an RA has been such a joy, but there is also much responsibility that comes with the job as well. In the beginning I facilitated over 40 roommate agreements, but even then, some rooms continued to have problems. During the entire spring semester, I had to intervene and mediate between one particular suite because they could not seem to get along. They would argue over temperature, overnight guests, and a number of other things. I realized that this group of residents would need some extra attention. So, to ensure that things were going well, and that everyone was comfortable in their living space I would stop by twice a week when everyone was in, and we casually discussed what was going on that week and if there were any ways we could work to improve. Now that Spring Semester has come, I still check in about once a week to maintain what we have established, but that suite constantly tells me how far they have come and how they never thought they would enjoy living together but now they really love it.

When the 7th floor residents first arrived, I noticed that everyone was pretty shy and had still been hiding in their shells. I knew that if there was going to be a sense of community on our floor then I would need to create that atmosphere for them. So I went downstairs and checked out a few games. I sent a message in our 7th floor group chat that said, Meet me in the gather space, lets play board games. I sat and waited and at first they were reluctant, but a few of them came out to play. I still wasnt satisfied, and I did not want to leave anyone out so I took it upon myself to knock on each door and verbally invite them to come out and join. Before I knew it the entire floor had come together, and we stayed up until 4 in the morning playing games, getting to know each other, and just having a great time. My residents tell me that was the night that started our 7th floor family, and we have continued this as a tradition by having family game nights multiple times a month. Not only is it a fun way for them to end their week, but it is also a reminder of what brought us together and it aids in keeping our community so strong.

In the Fall semester I planned and executed a week long series of events for the entire building to enjoy. I wanted to ensure that the residents had a safe environment where they could still celebrate and enjoy Halloween indoors. I began to plan the events, and realized that RA Djenabou, and the community council also had programs in mind so instead of competing against my staff I decided to join forces and we executed an amazing week filled with fun. We had a fall festival where over 100 residents showed up, we had a building wide trick or treat event, and so much more. Overall, I was extremely satisfied, and it was a joy to see a smile on each residents face.
