Melanie Chaves

Samford University
From Helena, AL
I transferred to Samford Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing based on reading Ms. Ida V. Moffett's book called, Courage to Care. Her personal values, professionalism, morals, and ethics as a registered nurse were directly in line with what I believe a nurse should portray. In her book, Ms. Moffett stated: "Allow yourself to care, really care for the people whom you are responsible. Love them. Get involved in their struggle. Care We must not treat people as unknown objects, disregard their personal habits or their families. We must be careful not to exploit people's dignity with instruments and exposure." This particular line in her novel made me realize that I wanted to attend a nursing school that would implement this kind of caring and compassion into their training. These factors along with the nursing school's high priority to achieve the necessary skills to become proficient in the art of critical thinking and high standard healthcare implementation with people of various backgrounds and cultures by an introduction to individual and group components of healthcare prevention and management of different aspects of healthcare. All these factors which correlate with my personal mission as a future registered nurse and member of a health team.
