I am a dual enrolled student working towards becoming a librarian. I am working on my BLIS degree at USM, while also earning my second and third associate degrees in sociology and social & behavioral science.
I have a strong desire to help people find the questions that they need to ask in order to find the solutions to bettering their lives and helping others.
Finding ways to make the impossible possible.
I am currently in treatment for breast cancer which I was diagnosed with in 2020. A mom to two adult daughters (I am 45 years old).
I refuse to let anything stop me.

Dungeons and Dragons Program
One year ago, this month, I started a Dungeons and Dragons program for teens and young adults. This program has brought together a variety of people who may never have come together previously to be friends. We have a regular group of people who have been with the program from the beginning and a few who have come in and left over the year. We have a mix of neurodivergent, neurotypical, non handicapped, handicapped and severely handicapped players who all come together to meet up every other week to pretend to be elves, half-elves, tieflings, half-orcs, one person who chose to stay human (He might be an elf in real life), and a jackalope.
This program is a masterclass in what modern public service is meant to achieve. It moves beyond the traditional "transactional" model of a library-where a patron simply exchanges a card for a book-and enters the realm of transformational service.
By creating a space where these players can sit at the same table, I am facilitating a rare form of social equity.
Here is how this work elevates the definition of public service today:
Radical Inclusivity Through "The Third Space"
In sociology, the "Third Space" is a social environment separate from the two usual environments of home and work/school. For neurodivergent or handicapped individuals, traditional social spaces can often be overstimulating or physically inaccessible.
By using the framework of a tabletop RPG, I have provided a structured social equalizer. In the game, a physical handicap or a cognitive difference is superseded by the character's stats and the player's imagination. When the group focuses on a shared goal like defeating a dragon or solving a puzzle, the barriers of the "real world" dissolve.
Public service at its best doesn't just "accommodate" people; it integrates them so thoroughly that their labels become secondary to their contributions.
Modern society is increasingly siloed, yet my table has brought together a "variety of people who may never have come together previously." This is the creation of bridging social capital.
Public service today is often the only remaining glue in fragmented communities. By fostering friendships between people of different physical abilities and neurological types, I am building empathy that extends far beyond the library walls. These players aren't just learning how to play a game; they are learning how to navigate a diverse world with patience, humor, and teamwork.
We often define public service by the assistance it provides, but my program defines it by the agency it restores.
For the "Human" (who might be an elf): The library provides a place to belong.
For the Severely Handicapped Player: The library provides a theater where they can be a powerful half-orc or a dwarf sorcerer.
Public service is the heartbeat of a healthy democracy. When I facilitate a D&D session, I am practicing "Green Librarianship" in a social sense-creating a sustainable, regenerative community culture. The library is not just a building full of information, but a living room for the imagination where everyone, regardless of their "starting stats" in life, has a seat at the table.
One year in, I have moved past "volunteering" and into community architecture.
