January, 29 2018 - Verified by Muhlenberg CollegeAs a summer 2018 intern, I work closely with the executive director and administrators of the Allentown School District Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides enriched educational opportunities for students in the Allentown School District. Specifically, I am working with the foundation in the areas of communications and development. I am helping assemble the 2017-2018 fiscal year's annual report, designing page layouts that reflect the year's grants, events, and other activities that benefited Allentown's students while thanking all of our generous supporters and our devoted board members. I am also helping write letters and news releases for the foundation. I write, edit pictures, and design pages, and I am working with the foundation to develop plans to secure future donations.
After going through an application and interview process, I will be a Head Tutor starting in the Fall 2018 semester. In this position, I will collaborate with other Head Tutors to organize tutor training sessions, and I will maintain email communications with other tutors regarding training sessions and payment information. I am Level I certified by the College Reading and Learning Association for 10+ hours of training and 25+ hours of tutoring. As a tutor, I have worked through example sentences in Spanish, noting the details, and I have explained distinctions in Spanish-language usage. I coordinate and write records of tutor-tutee sessions and receive ongoing training in the complexities of tutoring sessions. Tutoring sessions are one hour per week for each tutee.
This was a seasonal job that I took advantage of during peak season for UPS--December. I worked weekdays during winter break from college for two successive winter seasons (December 2016, December 2017). As a helper, I ran packages that the driver handed me from the UPS truck to the place of delivery, setting down the packages and procuring signatures, if necessary. I verified addresses on packages and had to stay moving to help get through the drivers daily deliveries, even in sometimes adverse weather conditions. Working for the UPS center in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, I was a helper in residential and commercial areas of Allentown, Pennsylvania.
This position requires that I work in the Muhlenberg College Student Life Suite and am available for whatever tasks the general office manager and directors of student activities need help with. I have gained experience answering phone calls respectfully; assisting students with questions; entering student information and organizing data in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, as well as in Google Drive applications; responding to emails; printing, copying, and sorting documents in an office; creating and dispersing flyers; and serving as a helping hand at campus-wide weekend events organized by the Muhlenberg Activities Council. I work on campus during the academic year.
Working here, I am a part of the Lehigh Valley's zoological park, tucked away in the Trexler Nature Preserve, Schnecksville, Pennsylvania. Part of the Guest Services department, I work in the two gift shops, the Nature Store and the General Store, and the two food vendors, the Caf and Farm Concessions. My experiences include cooking and preparing food for guests, using a cash register, selling merchandise, being available to help transport items and clean up trash, interacting with young children, and assisting wherever needed at after-hours events. I work during the summer and, previously, worked some weekends during the academic year. During the zoo's "Winter Lights Spectacular," I served hot chocolate and small food items.
I served food to customers at this small, family-owned restaurant in Allentown known for its cheesesteaks and other sandwiches. I took orders and prepared food for customers. In addition, my duties often included helping set up the restaurant in the morning and cleaning up at the end of the day. Throughout the day, I got experience greeting people, using a cash register, paying attention to details, and washing dishes. I worked most Saturdays.
