Ryan Nelson

Majoring in M E
Iowa State University, Class of 2017
From Ames, IA
My name is Ryan Nelson and I am currently an undergraduate student (senior) in mechanical engineering at Iowa State University. I have a strong desire to go into project management in the area of additive manufacturing. Over the past few years, I have had the opportunity to participate in a few internship opportunities as well as some on-campus activates at Iowa state University. Recently I had an opportunity to work at an additive manufacturing company that featured multiple 3D printing platforms such as SLS, SLA, and FDM. During this internship, I learned how to print/process stereolithography files and 3D printed models. In 2015, I completed a six month internship with The Schwans Food Company. While with Schwans, I had the opportunity to apply my leadership and technical knowledge to multiple projects for further development of my communication and problem solving skills. At Schwans, I worked in the Global Supply Chain Engineering Group. In this group, I assisted in the installation of a multi-million dollar automation project for the extrusion line of the ice cream plant. For the project, I facilitated standard work documentation and assigned job positions for the new capital equipment as well as collected/analysed data that helped in the development and calibration of the capital equipment. At Iowa State, I have also been able to participate in several organizations which I am a part of Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) as well as Engineers Without Boarders (EWB). I Previously served as the vice-president for the ESW Iowa State Chapter. As vice-President I provide support in the planning and publicizing of engineering related events and activities, communicate and advocate the interest of our group, as well as have the opportunity to attend leadership training's at international conferences.
