I teach Generalist and Clinical courses in the MSW and BSW programs. My teaching interests include substance use, social welfare policy, policy advocacy, the history of social welfare in the United States, quantitative research methods, qualitative research methods, and the integrative seminar. I serve as Associate Director of the School of Social Work, which includes leading the School's assessment efforts and ensuring adherence to School and University policies in resolving student concerns. I participated in three self-studies and re-accreditation visits and served as lead author of the assessment section for two of these. I also served on Radford University's Faculty Senate for twelve years and served on several University committees.
I taught foundation and advanced MSW courses in on-campus and satellite programs, including courses in substance use, mental health policy and services, social welfare policy, and psychopathology. I developed a new advanced practice course in substance abuse (SW 504) and significantly revised a course in mental health policy and programs (SW 514). I served as academic advisor for 5-20 MSW students each year. I served on dissertation committees and as reader for doctoral qualifying exams inside and outside the School. I participated in the School's self-study and site visit for CSWE re-accreditation. Job titles included Lecturer (2000-2001) and Assistant Professor (2001-2007).
I taught research methods and administration in the BSW and MSW programs. I also assisted with the School's self-study in preparation for re-accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
I provided consultation to prevention and treatment programs regarding program evaluation efforts, used SAS to calculate monthly reports for all substance use treatment providers in Texas that received state funding, and assisted in writing a successful federal grant application for enhancement of Texas' performance measurement systems (CSAT TOPPS II).
I taught introductory statistics courses for students in the BSW program and related majors.
Among other duties, I provided counseling to individuals and families and assisted the Director of Development in program development and communication tasks. El Centro del Barrio (now dba CentroMed) is a non-profit agency that provides health, mental health, substance use, and dental treatment in the South and West areas of San Antonio, Texas.
