Serra Kocak, Ph.D.

Hi everyone! I'm Serra Kocak. I recently earned my Ph.D. in Sociology from Binghamton University, where my research focused on migration, gender, social mobility, and ethnography. I enjoy teaching courses that encourage students to think critically about the social world and connect sociological concepts to everyday life. Teaching Sociology of Sports has been especially meaningful to me because it combines my academic interests with my lifelong passion for sports. As a sociologist, I love exploring how sports reflect broader social issues such as race, gender, class, identity, media, and inequality. I hope this course encourages you to look beyond the games themselves and think about the powerful role sports play in shaping society. I strive to create an engaging, supportive, and interactive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, challenging assumptions, and developing their own sociological perspectives. One fun fact about me is that I was a competitive athlete for many years, and I still love staying active can do handstands and even walk on my hands! Outside the classroom, I enjoy documentary filmmaking, traveling, horseback riding, and spending time outdoors. I'm excited to learn with you this semester, and I hope you enjoy the course!
