Starla Jefferson K'wosenaut

Majoring in General Studies Bachelor's Degree
Southern New Hampshire University, Class of 2024
From Bellingham (Lummi)
My birth-given name is Starla Jefferson, my traditional name is K'wosenaut. I a member of the Lummi (Lhaq'temish) Tribe situated in the coastal area of the Pacific Northwest in Washington State, U.S. Presently, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in General Studies at Southern New Hampshire University. I am fortunate to have four wonderful children and be happily married to my high school sweetheart, Anthony, an SNHU graduate. We live on the Nooksack Reservation and often visit our second home on the Lummi Reservation for work and family events. Engaging in activities such as fishing, hunting, gathering, and harvesting from nature carries profound meaning in my life. Taking part in cultural practices with my family, especially those connected to the water, is a treasured experience. I am deeply dedicated to educating future generations about the significance of environmental conservation and instilling a sense of duty as protectors of the Salish Sea. #waterislife

17th Annual Weavers Teaching Weavers Conference
An integral part of my job at the Northwest Indian includes creating indigenous workshops for tribal communities that surround our colleges six sites and one of the most well known conferences is our Weavers Teaching Weavers annual event created by our late tribal Chief and other tribal artists. The purpose of this annual event is to allow experienced indigenous Basket Weavers to learn from one another and to share their weaving techniques. The attached photo is a completed cedar basket weaved by one of our artist in residence master weavers who teaches cedar weaving classes at the annual weaving event.
