Shenandoah University's McCormick Civil War Institute Celebrates the Completion of Two Projects
From Volume 48, No.4 of Civil War News: Shenandoah University’s McCormick Civil War Institute (MCWI) prides itself on creating opportunities for students in Civil War Era Studies to engage in research and the real-world work of historians. Recently, two of those opportunities resulted in completion of projects; the first is the publication of the second volume in MCWI’s primary documents series, “A Good Cause”: Letters from the Ninth New York Heavy Artillery. The book consists of fifty-nine letters penned by eleven soldiers in the regiment, spanning the period from March 1863 to June 1865. Steven Stabler assisted with “A Good Cause” alongside fellow SU students, Caitlyn Graulau, Jayce Hall, Brianna Jarvis, Kimberley Oliveto, Aidan Steinly, and Mel Siebert. The research team investigated a variety of primary source materials, including land records, wills, receipts, census data, and contemporary newspapers, to piece together aspects of the experiences of enslaved people at The Retreat.

Going Virtual at the Battle of Cool Spring
Shenandoah University’s McCormick Civil War Institute commemorated the 155th anniversary of the Battle of Cool Spring with tours, lectures and the unveiling of an augmented reality experience. The augmented reality experience, “Through Their Eyes,” is a collaborative effort between the McCormick Civil War Institute and the Shenandoah Center for Immersive Learning (SCiL). Visitors will use an iPhone or iPad to float a holographic 3D version of the battlefield above a 2D map. Clickable flags on the map will take users into one-minute experiences of the battle using 360 virtual reality. Visitors will find themselves in a dramatic attack, retreat, camp scene, or the battle’s sorrowful aftermath. A total of 12 students in Noyalas’ spring 2019 Civil War & Reconstruction course researched the backgrounds of the soldiers whose accounts are used as the basis for the various scenes and moments. Steven Stabler ’22 played various roles in the filming. Steven Stabler also assisted in composing the script for the orientation video detailing the Civil War history of the Shenandoah River Campus at Cool Spring Battlefield in Clarke County, Virginia.
