During the Fall of 2018, I was the Biochemistry 1 Teachers Assistant. Responsibilities included grading weekly homework assignments and monthly exams. During the Spring of 2019 I became the Biology Core 1 Laboratory Teachers Assistant. As such I lead two sections of the lab each week. Responsibilities include presenting relevant material pertaining to the lab, demonstrating how to carry out different parts of the lab, and answering questions as they complete the lab for that week.
The research is focused on the heparin receptor Transmembrane Protein 184a which actively participates in modulating blood vessel growth. While some mechanisms are unclear, my research aims at determining whether it serves as a signaling molecule, affecting vascular endothelial cadherin during sprout growth production. Elucidating the mechanisms will aid in the development of angiogenetic therapies for those suffering from atherosclerosis, certain cancers, & serious wounds. Responsibilities include knocking down the receptor in zebrafish embryos, performing immunofluorescence, and simulating potential interactions between the receptor and a heparan sulfate chain using Visual Molecular Dynamics (VMD)
Observed surgeries ranging from a kidney transplant to left peritoneal craniotomy. Researched right internal jugular vein thrombus in patients undergoing veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation through the in-house database and additional electronic hospital records. Presented the results at the 27th annual ELSO conference in San Diego, CA and the 54th Annual Meeting of the Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society (ECSS) in Tampa, FL. The abstract is published in the online journal Innovations. Following the program, I was an intern for the Fall semester, which involved coordinating events between the hospital and local universities, which allowed students to attend journal club meetings, grand rounds, etc. Come the summer, I was either observing in the O.R, or researching survival rates of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement patients with and without Dialysis. The poster was presented at ECSS in Jacksonville, FL
