April 19-28, 2018 - Grant for research: "The Richter Grant Program at Hanover College provides students with the opportunity to engage in a wide range of independent learning experiences they find especially interesting, but which are not normally part of the college curriculum. The program thus seeks to encourage student initiative, creativity, and independence in learning. Projects are not under the direction of any faculty members, and the funding of the project is in no way dependent upon the prior approval of a faculty member." I wrote a research proposal that had to be approved by a committee in order to be given the funds for this project. My project took place in Perth, Western Australia. Australia is the largest wool producing country in the world and they have had problems with the sheep blowfly (a fly that breeds only on sheep and can be fatal for sheep). I spoke with wool-based businesses and farmers to discuss how the blowfly affected/is affecting their business, and I then presented my findings to Hanover faculty, staff, and students.

While working closely with my entomology professor, I sorted insects collected from various traps, curated insects, identified insects, and kept the lab clean and organized. These insects then became a part of the Hanover College Insect Collection. I did this from September 2016 to April 2018.
