Majoring in Environmental Engineering
Georgia Institute of Technology, Class of 2022
From Hong Kong
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Alex is a first-generation college student studying Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech as a Lee Hysan Memorial Scholar and an HKSES Scholar. Alex's work lies at the intersection of faith, climate, and storytelling. He is the founder and editor of The Xylom, creating personal stories of science and humanity. He works with science professionals in over 20 countries and regions. For his work at The Xylom, Alex has been accepted into the Class of 2019 of the Millennium Fellowship, presented at the 2019 Georgia Climate Conference, and represented Georgia Tech at the 2020 ACC Leadership Symposium at Louisville, KY, focusing on storytelling as an agent for social change. Outside of his role at The Xylom, Alex is part of Georgia Tech's Sustainability Student Advisory Council and is the co-creator of the #FridaysforFuture at Georgia Tech. He is affiliated with Young Evangelicals for Climate Action, trained by former VPOTUS Al Gore as a Climate Reality Leader, and is a Serve-Learn-Sustain intern for the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance for Summer 2020. He also co-chairs the Hong Kong Student Association at Georgia Tech and is researching on controlling invasive Burmese Pythons at the Everglades National Park in South Florida. You will see Alex at most Georgia Tech football and basketball games, and you will not want to sit next to him, because he is a very, very loud fan.

Writer at Medium
I mostly write articles about the intersection of science and society on Medium. This manifests in a few areas, such as citizen science, science education and connections between engineering and creativity industry. In March 2018, I conducted an exclusive interview with a researcher from the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University about their ongoing citizen science initiative, Treeversity. The article, which has since been published on LinkedIn and Medium, can be found on my profile. In April 2018, I received permission from advertising legend George Lois to write a book review for Damn Good Advice (for people with talent!). In May 2018, I also covered the City Nature Challenge, interviewing staff of WWF-HK and citizen scientists. This gained me access to an invite-only WWF large mammals and firefly census, where I covered the endeavor to document the endemic Mai Po bent-winged firefly.
