Altyn Yerzhambayeva

As an Orientation Leader at EIU, working at the New Students & Family Program, I guided incoming freshmen and transfer students through the onboarding process during orientation programs. Throughout the orientation process, I led small-group sessions to mentor peers, fostered community, and helped students navigate campus resources, academic expectations, and student life. I also delivered large-group presentations and engaging skits to communicate important university information. Additionally, I provided logistical support by assisting with student check-in, campus tours, and information resources. Collaborating closely with university staff and fellow leaders, I helped ensure smooth, welcoming transitions for new students and their families. Throughout my job position, I served as a positive campus ambassador, promoting student involvement and representing EIUs values. I completed training in leadership, communication, diversity and inclusion, and conflict resolution, and confidently supported groups of varying sizes (more than 1000 this summer) in fast-paced environments.

In this role, I provided customer service to over 300 students daily, responding to questions and ensuring a positive experience in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. I was promoted to manager within one month of employment based on reliability, initiative, and leadership. In that capacity, I led and coordinated a diverse team of student workers to maintain efficient and timely meal service. I developed strong problem-solving and multitasking skills under pressure, communication, and cultural competence, while working with my fellow peers and staff.
