Amrita Ghosh

Majored in Mechanical Engineering
Iowa State University, Class of 2020
From Kolkata, WEST BENGAL
I am finally a dual degree holder in Economics and Engineering, waiting to join work and have a blast. I completed my Bachelor degree with a Magna cum Laude from Iowa State University, with a minor in Entrepreneurship & Innovation, a different way of calling Business Management. It involved courses related to Management and Business, how to start a business, writing business plans, technical reports, cost and break-even analyses, and forms of management in corporate organizations. With that, I can blend the specializations I have studied in Economics, related to Operations Research, International Trade, and Environmental Economics. I would thank my parents and Iowa State University to give me a chance to fulfill my dream of becoming a Mechanical Engineer. I am sure, my parents are very proud of me that I am the third generation of mechanical engineer in my family. I was born in the Kolkata, erstwhile known as Calcutta, the state capital of West Bengal. My father is a professor of Mechanical Engineering in a top-ranking university in the city, and my mother is a high school Mathematics teacher. My grandfather was also in the same profession, in the very same university too. I am the third generation, who has passed out of the same university, where my father and grandfather were teachers. My grandmother was a homemaker. I have moved on to Mechanical engineering from Economics as studying engineering wasn't financially viable at the time I went to college. Much later, when I finally got a chance to study engineering, I discovered my ineligibility to apply for engineering existed in India and Canada due to choosing Arts in high school. There were other countries like the USA and Australia that didn't have any restrictive criteria for applications coming in for engineering, and I was ready with my plan to apply there. I applied and was accepted in multiple schools in the US. I chose to come and study at Iowa State University, finally completing my dream. Coming to describing myself in terms of my personal attributes, I should mention that I am persevering, bold, generous, responsible and kindhearted. Being well-behaved, honest and hardworking makes me feel proud of myself. I enjoy being around people, making new friends and sharing our experiences of the journey called life. Apart from studies, I spend time cultivating my hobbies. I have multiple hobbies due to my versatile nature allowing me to eliminate the monotony in life. Vocal music, art, reading books, learning new languages and creative writing has been a part of me now, for many years. I have received training in Indian music for 11 long years. Books of all kinds have never left my side. I take a keen interest in drawing and painting too. Learning an international language like German has facilitated learning about the culture in one of the countries in Europe. Photography has been my area of interest when I developed another hobby, traveling to places around my country.

Developed
I was an enthusiastic member of the photography club 'Developed' at ISU. It enables people to learn skills in photography, critically analyse their own and other photos and submit new photos for various challenging assignments individually or in a group. Often we had a theme picked by a random word chooser (an application in a website that spits out words randomly) and took photos according to that theme. It was so much fun to know what theme words people got because they were not disclosed until the next meeting. The fun heightened when I put those pictures in ISU Photostream, our own photo publishing corner. It's an amazing feeling when you can see your own photo being chosen as one of the 'most viewed' photos of the month and the like. Sometimes you can see your clicked snapshot where everyone else could see your name flashing. It's such a proud moment! I took lots of photos inside and outside the university, taking the passion for photography more seriously than ever. It also sparked an interest in making graphic t-shirts from my own photos. In fact, I chose one of the photos that I took in my hometown as the background image for this website itself. This was Durga Puja in one of the famous award winning pandals of Kolkata.
