Brian Duncan

Member of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi
From McKinney, Texas
I'm a 45-year-old student, husband and father of two wonderful (and way too smart) children. In December 2018, I (finally) earned a bachelor's degree in computer science. In the spring of 2019, I will start my first semester of grad school as a computer-science major. Thanks to the computer-science fast-track program and my already having five graduate courses completed, I will graduate with a master's degree at the end of 2019. I have software development experience in C++, C#, Java, C, and scripting experience in SQL and IDEAScript. I am skilled in data acquisition, data analysis, reporting, and interactive computing (VR, GUI programming), with a keen security awareness. I have served 17+ years in IT- and technical roles.

Phi Theta Kappa College Project
The purpose of the 2015 College Project for the Alpha Mu Tau chapter was to bring awareness of Collin College student support programs to the student body. I interviewed program directors and department heads, created surveys, and attended project meetings. My voluntary participation and leadership in this project was the primary reason for my earning the District II Hall of Honor award.

Using Virtual Reality for Equipment Maintenance
Of 36 competing projects, earned third place at the Fall 2018 UTDesign Expo for Computer Science. The purpose of the project was to build an immersive virtual reality training system for a technician to perform maintenance in a 3D virtual environment. An accompanying tutorial utilizes audio and visual cues to aid the technician in identifying a failed component, replacing the component, and bringing the system back to a working state. The subject of maintenance tasks is a commercial diesel generator. The tutorial effectively guides the user through the maintenance procedures. The project’s design primarily focuses upon a positive user experience and providing high interaction fidelity. Technologies: Unity game engine, C#, SteamVR, HTC Vive
