Assistant Executive Director of Freshman Follies at Freshman Follies
Freshman Follies is the first thing that the new freshman are able get to be involved in when they come to Oklahoma State University. Follies is a production done by many pairs of sorority and fraternity freshman, that is directed by their older members. It is a 10 minute long show for each cast that tells a story with singing and dancing showing the freshman that it is okay to be weird self in college. Being the Assistant executive for this incredible organization was the most rewarding thing that I have ever done ,and is something that I will hold dearly in my heart forever. We were able to double what they raised last year, resulting in $56,886 for Hearts for Hearing, providing families with the funds that they need to be able to afford hearing aides and cochlear implants. We did this by using many different strategies. First, we moved the production to a larger facility allowing for more people to come, which meant more ticket sales. Second, we raised ticket sales by $2 because the new venue had more quality than the previous. Thirdly, we got the casts more involved in the philanthropy. Many never knew what Freshman Follies was raising money for so we made a point to tell the story of Hearts for Hearing to them. This allowed them to get more involved since they knew exactly why they were putting in so much work for. Every cast member and director also sent out 10 envelopes to friends and families asking for donations that brought in over $30,000 from just those letters. Lastly we had many benefit nights that helped us get to our end goal. In the beginning my Executive and I had an idea of reaching $50,000 and brainstormed ways that we could make this a reality. This experience showed me that students have so much more power for change if we put all of our effort in. Having an idea become a reality gave me the confidence to know that I should dream big because many of those dreams can come true.
