Courtney Drealle Higgins, daughter of Sammie Lee Higgins and Dorothy Pearl Higgins, sister to Terrence Samuale Higgins, and sister in law to Latesha Higgins of New Bern, North Carolina, will be graduating on May 9, 2015 with a Bachelor's Degree in Middle Grades Mathematics, with a second academic concentration in Special Education from Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. During her time at FSU, she was recognized for being on Dean's List and Chancellor's List. She was chosen for various scholarships and internships such as the CHEER Scholarship, TESAP scholarship, UROMS internship, as well as Student Teaching Internship. Courtney has served in various organizations such as National Council of Negro Women, NAACP where she served as Education Committee Chair, Illusions Modeling Club, Residence Hall Association: Vice President of Williams Hall, Association of Women's in Mathematics, Bronco Ambassadors, and Collegiate Middle Level Association. She was also nominated Fayetteville State University's Student Teacher of the Year. After graduation, Courtney will be pursuing her Master's in School Counseling, working in Jones County Public Schools as a Middle School Math Educator, and also be running the organization "R.I.S.E." which stands for "Reaching Individual Self Enhancements", where she is the Founder and CEO. She has a strong passion for God, family, education, giving back to others, particularly the youth, civil rights and social action, environment, and health.

UROMS is funded by Department of Education and designed to improve student recruitment, retention and graduation rate of under-represented students in Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Forensic Science and Biotechnology programs. The Aim of the UROMS program is make all resources available to the under-represented students, including women, for successful retention in STEM subjects and continue to be successful in careers.

The mission of R.I.S.E. is to empower young women to Reach their Individual Self Enhancements. These young women need to know that they are significant, heroic, and exquisite. They are descendants of royalty and bound for greatness despite the internal and external barriers they go through. Where inquiry is used to develop self-love, health, education, and individuality through counseling and mentorship. This organization conducts workshops on modesty, preparing for high school & college, fitness, and community service projects. Teaching these young ladies to overcome the scars in their life such as abuse, peer pressure, failed relationships/friendships, bullying, etc. and to RISE above it all. Advocacy for social, physical, mental, and academic change.

Student teaching/teacher internship is a cooperative endeavor between the University and the public schools. The partnership is designed to exchange ideas, to plan cooperatively, and to provide students with a realistic and natural setting for a culminating experience. You have to go through an interview process and be chosen by the School of Education.
