The Black Panther Party: A Spatial History
The Black Panther Party was formed in 1966 by two community college students, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, in Oakland, California. They sought to enact black pride and self-determination in the face of crippling systemic oppression. To do this, they first advocated for armed self-defense against police brutality. When this triggered brutal state repression, they switched gears to grassroots organization to ensure the health and wellbeing of oppressed peoples. But state repression and internal division forced them to close their doors in 1982. Even so, the Party has continued to loom large in the American imagination, mostly as a compelling instance of armed resistance in the black American community. But beyond this, its history and politics have been obscured by the passage of time. This story-map aims to change that by recounting the Party's history in an immersive, accessible way so that anyone can learn it.

Presented two papers at GSURC. First, "'Off the Pigs'?: The Black Panther Party and Masculinity," a research paper originally written for my history capstone course. Argues that, despite the BPP's violent reputation, Panther men's masculinity was defined by their ability to empower the black community. Second, "On the Ethics of Removing Confederate Monuments," a research paper originally written for a philosophy course. Revised since presenting it at APPE.
