"A Time to Die: Moral Considerations of Dutch Euthanasia Policy"
A law passed in the Netherlands allows patients to request euthanasia or assisted suicide if three requirements are met. However, this law has sparked recent controversy because it allowed a man who experienced severe alcoholism to be euthanized. This essay explores the moral-legal issues that arise from this situation and how those concerns should be weighed for effective policy. I argue that it is ethically permissible and therefore should be legal for patients to have access to euthanasia or assisted suicide if the patients meet the requirements of having requests that are voluntary, well-considered and can demonstrate that there is no prospect of improvement.

“The Viable Alternative: Conflict, Human Rights, and Immigration Policy toward Latin America”
The movement of people from Latin American countries are not just people migrating north because they want to enter the country illegally. Rather, international criminal organizations, domestic terrorism, abject poverty and the lack of enjoyment of basic human freedoms are major factors leading to this phenomenon. Children have shown up to our borders alone. Mothers and fathers have sent their children through the wilderness to reach a place that would be more safe for their children than remaining home. At any given time during these seven years, humans have been warehoused like tools or caged like animals (Committee on Foreign Affairs 2014). In light of these facts, I outline here why the best plan forward is an immigration policy that favors an open border, humanitarian aid in the form of food and clothing, and strong strides toward peacekeeping missions backed by the United States as the principal elements of a long-term solution to Latin American Immigration challenges.

"Administering Transitional Justice in Colombia: Land Restitution for Victims of Colombian Conflict"
With the increasing number of intrastate conflicts occurring across the globe, much scholarship has been done suggesting best practices for civil conflict management and the reconstruction of peace. In particular, the field of transitional justice has attempted to answer how we should re-establish law and order in conflict-affected societies. “Transitional Justice,” in the words of Meertens and Zambrano, “represents a set of measures designed to restore peace, rectify past injustices and transform, to the extent possible, the root causes of armed conflict” (Meertens and Zambrano 189). Colombia, as an example of a conflict-affected society, has confronted transitional justice challenges while having to reconstruct a legal system that meets the needs of its citizens. One measure Colombia has taken to reconstruct law and order is by adopting the 2011 Law for Victims and Land Restitution. The situation in Colombia as one that confronts issues of transitional justice raises two essential philosophical questions: What is the purpose of law and does the Law for Victims and Land Restitution fulfill that purpose?

"Addressing Conflict in Mali: Political, Humanitarian, and Security Problems"
Since Mali’s independence in 1960, Mali has had four significant rebellions. These rebellions have left Mali in perpetual political, humanitarian, and social conflict. The most recent conflict occurred in 2012 and continues today as the international community works to combat the many issues hindering Mali from achieving sustainable peace. The fact that foreign intervention is needed and that there have been numerous uprisings raises four critical questions. The first question asks why intrastate conflict has persisted in Mali. The second question asks what the challenges to building a durable peace in Mali are? The third question asks what has been done to address the problems in Mali and how effective have they been? The final question asks to what extent have recent efforts to resolve the crisis changed the platform for peacebuilding in Mali? This research is an attempt to answer each of these questions. First, I present an overview of the history of conflict in Mali and how it connects to causal factors of the most recent continuation of conflict. Second, I expound on the most significant challenges to peacebuilding in Mali, which are creating a legitimate government and gaining control of the security crisis. I also explain and evaluate the success of policies that have been designed to address these issues. Finally, I reflect on the prospect of sustainable peace for Mali and explain why durable peace is unlikely in Mali.

"Can We Lock Away Violence? The Reinforcement of Violence in Society through the Social Contract"
John Locke’s Second Treatise of Government suggests that the relationship between violence and society is that government, as the ruling figure of a society, takes control over violence and manipulates it on behalf of its society members to keep them from the violence in which the conditions of the state of nature allow humanity to find themselves entrenched. However, the premises of Locke’s own argument and the evidence to which we can apply Locke’s theory of violence and society push us to conclude that Locke’s argument is, if not on the whole, nearly antithetical in his major claims about the relationship under consideration. The theory advances antithetically on Locke’s conception of the state of nature and how it functions as well as on the logic that legitimates thievery while claiming to disagree with it. Further, I find that society performs no aid to resolving the problems found in the state of nature.
