Frida Teran

Majored in Biology, B.S., Minored in Chemistry
University of Iowa, Class of 2023
From Mission, TX
I am an MD/PhD student at the University of Iowa Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP), pursuing a PhD in Neuroscience. My previous research on serotonergic neurons and central chemoreception helped me develop a great interest in understanding the mechanisms of seizures and how they cause respiratory dysfunction. By studying rodent models of seizure-induced death, I aim to understand the pathophysiology of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) in order to identify biomarkers and develop preventative strategies. In addition, I study dietary therapies for the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy and the role of serotonin in their mechanism of action.
