Hannah Fallon

Majored in Biology
Georgia Institute of Technology, Class of 2022
From Ringgold, GA
Hi all, my name is Hannah Fallon and I have an intense passion for the biology and conservation of plants and have tried to tie this into as much of my life as possible. For the past year I have been working for the Urban Honeybee Project as student assistant to Dr. Jennifer Leavey and through this am working my way to becoming a certified beekeeper. I also recently joined the Yellow Jacket Roller Derby team and am honing my skills there!

Yellow Jacket Roller Derby (YJRD)
I joined YJRD back in August of 2019 and it has become something that I look forward to every week. I started with almost no skating skills, but have recently worked my way up to a level 3 player, meaning I have the skills necessary to participate in bouts (roller derby matches). This sport has been a major challenge for me since I had no previous experience being part of a team sport, but the support from the other members really helped keep me going. I'm very proud of my team and how much they and this sport has allowed me to grow as a person.
Conservation Genetics Intern at Atlanta Botanical Garden

As an intern in the Conservation Genetics Lab at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, my project was to create a phylogeny for the species found within the genus Acineta, which is in the Orchidaceae family. My daily tasks included extracting DNA from dried tissue samples, running PCR reactions, gel electrophoresis, and gel imaging. I also briefly learned how to use BLAST, R-studio, and MEGA-X to work with DNA sequences and create a phylogeny from them.
