After serving as a conference counselor in 2015 and 2016, I was selected as Head Counselor of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference 2017. Iowa RYLA is a joint conference of Rotary Districts 5970 and 6000 is a 6-day leadership conference held at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. In 10 months I interviewed, selected and trained counselors, coordinated speakers, assembled schedules for each group, made a budget for all supplies needed, collaborated with a leadership team, and planned out all activities.
The objectives of RYLA are:
-To encourage and assist youth leaders in methods of responsible and effective leadership by equipping them with leaderships skills
-To encourage continued and stronger leadership of youth by youth
-To publicly recognize the outstanding qualities of many young people who are rendering service to their schools and communities as leaders
During RYLA, small groups of 12 high school students are led by a student counselor and Rotarian. During the conference, students are exposed to topics such as drug abuse, suicide, poverty, racism, and sexual assault. These issues are discussed in small groups by trained leaders and students are empowered to understand these complex issues by world renowned speakers. This conference provides leaderships skills through experiential activities, small group discussions, and fostering a supportive and encouraging community.
