January, 04 2016 - Verified by Bob Jones UniversityThis internship gives me the opportunity to train dogs for specific scent-detection jobs including Dual-Purpose Police K9's, Single-Purpose Scent Detection dogs, Urban Search and Rescue dogs, and Medical Detection dogs. This internship also gives me the opportunity to participate in different research studies including the long-term Ovarian Cancer Detection Study and the short-term Red Arch Study which is attempting to show that dogs can detect pottery from a specific location and time period to prevent smuggling of this pottery.
This internship gave me the opportunity to assist zookeepers in caring for a wide variety of exotic animals through cleaning enclosures, providing enrichment, and presenting appropriate diets. I was also able to teach the children that attended zoo camp by presenting the various animals in the zoos to different classes. Additionally, I created a data sheet to aid the zookeepers in evaluating the eating habits of the Giant Anteater.
This job has allowed me to gain experience in animal care by giving me the opportunity to clean, feed, and provide exercise for dogs, cats, birds, and other exotic animals. I am also able to aid clients by giving them tours of the facilities.
