Spring 2016-Spring 2017; I studied the noncovalent interactions in networks of trimethylamine-N-oxide and urea. Focused specifically on zero-p energies and vibrational frequencies to find absolute energy minima. These minima would give insight into the interactions of TMAO:urea solutions in the natural world, and spreading light on the mechanism of denaturation for urea on proteins and the mechanism of protection for TMAO on proteins.
Fall 2017-Spring 2018; I am currently studying enthalpies of formation of methyl derivatives of furan, pyrrole, oxazole, isoxazole, and imidazole. We have found that homodesmotic model reactions work very well for this type of project, and I am grepping results of 0.12 kcal/mol (chemical accuracy is 1 kcal/mol) across five levels of theory, for TZ and QZ basis sets. Even DZ SCF calculations are returning a max error of 0.27 kcal/mol. Levels of theory used are SCF, B3LYP, M06-2X, wB97-xD, and MP2, with MP2 being the most intensive level.
