I grew up a Third-Culture Kid, as the child of white missionaries in Bundibugyo, Uganda. As such, I cannot fully identify with my mother's upbringing in North Carolina, nor my father's Slavic ethnicity, nor the cultural history of the Babwesi society I was raised in. I grew up stuck in the middle, neither an immigrant nor a true Babwesi. I was shaped and formed by the Babwesi around me, and I learned customs and a dialect of the Lubwisi language. Now I am in America, I am told that I am an American, but I know that this is not the case. I am not Babwesi either, not by cultural background or ethnicity. My cultural identity is both between these two cultures, and outside of them, a Third Culture identity.
