My name is Jose Luis Estrada, and I am an Industrial and Systems Engineering student at the University of San Diego. In July 2012, I moved from Los Mochis, Sinaloa Mexico to San Diego, California with the ambition to accomplish higher education in the United States. As a student coming from another country, I faced many barriers that challenged both my academics and extracurricular activities. For instance, learning a second language, adapting to a new school system, and having to live on my own were the main challenges that I had to overcome in order to continue with my purpose. As a matter of fact, I am part of the first generation in my family to attend college, and also I am the only one who has decided to study a major in STEM.
My desire of having a superior education led me to integrate my disadvantages into my development, and after some time my determination helped me to control and confront all situations. I became more involved within the schools organizations, where I met people with common interests and problems and who had extensive experience. Consequently, I developed increasingly sophisticated communication and leadership skills which empowered me to assume responsibilities within the organizations into which I was contributing.
With my experience, I have reached out to many students who lacked role models and hence motivation. I inspired them to transfer to 4-year universities, becoming the first of their families to graduate from college, and strive to obtain their dream jobs in the future. My goal of approaching such individuals is to help them believe that they can go beyond their goals by setting the example of my persistence.
