Jillian Shen

Member of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi
From Ontario, Calif.
My research works have mostly been related to adolescents and young adults who participate in more than one culture as well as the contribution they bring to the family and community that are often overlooked by society. I am interested in studying how these individuals unique language and cultural background affect their social, psychological, and educational development. My masters thesis is about language brokering, which refers to the translation and interpretation work immigrant children often do for their parents. In my thesis, I am examining whether language brokering helps immigrant youth emotionally understand their parents perspectives and reduce intergenerational cultural conflicts, particularly in the context of cohesive and understanding communication with parents. I am also a big dog lover and I enjoy reading at my leisure, hiking, and snowboarding.

The specific duties are listed as the following: − Translate consent forms and paper work from English to formal written Chinese − Manage files and prepare paperwork before data collection − Recruit participants through phone calls − Visit participants at their houses: visit each adolescent at home and talk to that adolescent and at least one parent about their home life. The visit is two-hour-long and composed of a semi-structured interview, questionnaires, and activities. − Fill out assessments and field notes for each participating family, especially taking notes on things that have not worked well for Asian families due to different cultural perspectives.
