A Novel, Direct Measure of DEI Coursework Efficacy in Higher Education by Julia Butler, Kelly Mendoza and Jean Rivera
We have created a method that we believe is a more direct measure of a course’s DEI goals: how comfortable is a student thinking about issues of DEI? How comfortable is a white student interacting with people of color? We have modified the Trier Social Stress Test (Kirschbaum et al., 1993), a task used to induce psychological stress in which participants must speak in front of a panel of “judges”. In our version, white participants will be asked to speak about race and racial disparities to a panel comprised of people of color. We will then measure their stress using salivary cortisol and electrodermal activity. We hypothesize that while we may not see changes in traditional implicit and explicit bias measures, we will see lower stress on our modified stress test in students that have taken more DEI courses. Presented at the L. Starling Reid Psychology Research Conference.

Group Dynamics: Perceptions of Overt and Subtle Body Language by Julia Butler, Danielle Cartier, and Nicole Boudrieau
This research was accepted to the Eastern Psychological Association 125th Annual Conference. This study looked at whether participants were able to identify dominance in both overt and subtle dominant body language. Participants (N = 23) were given a packet containing pictures of groups of people and asked if there was a dominant individual in each picture. The results showed that the only significant difference in the number of correct answers was between overt dominance compared to subtle and neutral dominance, F(2,21) = 43.38, p < 0.001.
