I am a senior at the University of Alabama with a major in Food and Nutrition (Nutrition Sciences concentration) and a minor in Biology, studying on the Pre-Medical Track. I am heavily involved both on- and off-campus, including roles such as the Honors College Assembly President, Emergency Department Scribe and Trainer, Alabama Action (community-based program) Student Leader, Good Samaritan Clinic volunteer, Nutrition-based research assistant, among other things. My interests lie primarily in the medical field, specifically the role nutrition plays in both the development and management of chronic diseases and conditions such as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, and diabetes.

Undergraduate Research Assistant at Department of Human Nutrition and Hospitality Management
Research assistant for the study titled “Bioactive Compounds in Watermelon Modulating Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Elders: The MOXIE Study” that is funded by the American Heart Association. Principal investigators include Dr. Kristi Crowe-White and Dr. Amy Ellis. The purpose of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial is to investigate the effects of 100% watermelon juice on measures of vascular function and oxidative stress in postmenopausal women. Trained to navigate and utilize the Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR) as well as in the Multi-Pass Method to collect dietary data. National Institutes of Health (NIH) certified as well. Roles include conducting 24-hour dietary recalls with participants using the Multi-Pass Method and NDSR software, revising and improving study protocols, collating participant instruction manual, among many other tasks.

The Honors College Assembly (HCA) at UA is a student-led organization designed to serve the Honors College students and enrich their undergraduate experience through opportunities provided by our four pillars: Student Life, Cultural Experiences and Diversity, Civic Engagement, and Research and Scholarship. As the president, I work with the other leadership members, and Honors College Faculty and Staff, to create events that promote student involvement and provide opportunity for growth. Such events include Lake Lurleen Clean-Up, Diwali, DaVinci Studio, Zone Party, "That Thing at Cypress Inn" Social, Blood Pressure Screenings, etc.

Emergency Department Scribe at PhysAssist Scribes, Inc
As a scribe in the Emergency Department, I work alongside ED physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants with each 10 hour shift. I accompany my provider into each patient room, and meticulously document the patient's chief complaint and additional information. Charting also includes documenting any physician-physician interaction, procedure notes, discharge/admission notes, etc. I am also responsible for contacting physicians of different specialities or hospitals when needed, and for preparing/retrieving any necessary information requested by the physicians. As a scribe, I am also expected to be knowledgeable of medical terminology, basic procedures, and ED flow in order to provide the most thorough charts in an efficient manner.

Train newly hired ED scribes how to be successful working in a fast-paced environment. This is accomplished through teaching the trainees how to navigate the EMR, basic medical terminology and procedures, and coding properties. I will then oversee the trainee as s/he attempts to work on their own and provide necessary assistance as well as prompt trainee interaction with provider.
