Play-Reading Committee
During my time in my public speaking class at my high school, our class partnered with a local elementary school to promote literacy and a love of reading among younger students. As part of this initiative, we volunteered regularly in elementary classrooms where we dressed up as characters from childrens books and brought stories to life through expressive reading and performance. By embodying the characters, we were able to capture students attention, make the stories more engaging, and create a fun and memorable reading experience. In addition to reading aloud, we spoke with the students about the importance of reading and how it supports their growth both inside and outside of school. We discussed how reading strengthens vocabulary, imagination, confidence, and academic success. We encouraged them to ask questions, make predictions, and see themselves as capable readers. This experience not only allowed me to connect with younger students and serve as a positive role model, but it also strengthened my own public speaking skills, creativity, and confidence. Most importantly, it reinforced my belief in the power of literacy, and the impact educators and mentors can have when they make reading engaging and meaningful for children.

Substitute at Anderson County Substitute Teacher

As a substitute teacher, I have supported multiple educators within my student teaching placement as well as in other schools throughout the district. In each setting, I worked to maintain instructional continuity by implementing lesson plans with fidelity while preserving the established routines, expectations, and classroom culture of the regular teacher. I have taught students across a wide range of learning abilities and academic levels, differentiating support as needed to ensure all students remained engaged and successful. My responsibilities have included administering assessments, guiding students through challenging content, addressing behavioral and academic concerns, and problem-solving issues that arose during the school day. While prioritizing consistency for students, I also began incorporating elements of my developing teaching philosophy such as fostering positive relationships, promoting active engagement, and creating a supportive classroom environment. My goal in each placement has been to make the day feel as structured and productive as possible while ensuring students feel supported and respected.

Reading Tutor at America Reads

As an America Reads tutor, I provided targeted reading support to students through both one-on-one and small-group instruction. I regularly worked with students outside of their classrooms to strengthen reading fluency and comprehension skills, facilitating guided reading sessions in which students took turns reading aloud. I supported older students through chapter-book instruction by asking purposeful comprehension questions and promoting critical thinking and discussion. In addition, I collaborated with the school librarian to assist students with selecting and checking out books, fostering a positive connection to reading. During my second year with the program, I expanded my role to include after-school tutoring focused on foundational literacy skills, including phonics instruction and sight word development, helping students build the skills necessary to begin reading independently.

Phonics Lesson
For this lesson, I designed and taught a phonics and grammar mini-lesson focused on identifying verbs and changing verb tense, with an emphasis on adding the –ed ending to form past tense. The lesson represented my ability to make foundational language skills engaging and accessible through structured discussion, partner collaboration, and meaningful application to students’ own experiences. To support instruction, I created visual teaching materials using Canva to organize content in a clear, student-friendly format. The slides provided guided practice, modeled examples, and discussion prompts that helped students analyze verbs and determine tense. I also incorporated interactive partner activities and a practice worksheet to reinforce learning and assess understanding. Using Canva allowed me to design visuals intentionally — highlighting key information, chunking content, and supporting comprehension for diverse learners. This lesson demonstrated my ability to thoughtfully integrate technology into instruction rather than using it as presentation alone. It reflects my growing confidence in combining pedagogy and digital design to create organized, engaging, and student-centered learning experiences that support literacy development.

Lesson Plan for Wit and Wisdom Curriculum
This second-grade Wit & Wisdom lesson centers on building comprehension, vocabulary development, and collaborative discussion skills through a close read of The Legend of the Bluebonnet by Tomie DePaola. Students engage in active inquiry using an “I Notice, I Wonder” graphic organizer to deepen their understanding of the text while making connections to previously studied texts about the plains and cultural traditions. The lesson begins with a vocabulary pre-assessment to gauge students’ prior knowledge of key content words (shaman, famine, miraculous, sacrifice, legend). As the text is read aloud in sections, students participate in structured think-pair-share discussions, respond to higher-order thinking questions, and record observations and questions on their graphic organizers. Explicit vocabulary instruction is embedded throughout the lesson, allowing students to analyze word meaning in context before receiving direct definitions. Students compare and contrast this legend with previously studied informational texts, strengthening their ability to organize ideas, ask and answer questions about key details, and describe how words and phrases contribute to meaning. The lesson concludes with students generating an “Itching Question” to promote curiosity and continued inquiry. Formative assessments include observation of student discussions and completion of the “I Notice, I Wonder” chart, while a vocabulary post-assessment measures growth in word understanding. Differentiation is provided through small-group support, sentence stems, read-aloud accommodations, and multiple response formats (drawing, statements, or sentences) to ensure all learners can access and demonstrate understanding of the objectives. This lesson promotes collaborative learning, critical thinking, vocabulary acquisition, and meaningful text analysis while connecting literacy instruction to cultural understanding and prior knowledge.

Community Engagement Project
For our Community Engagement Project, our team designed a parent-friendly math resource focused on supporting students with addition strategies at home. Our goal was to strengthen the home–school connection by equipping families with clear, practical tools they can confidently use to reinforce classroom learning. We created a “Counting On: Different Ways” resource that explains the counting-on strategy in simple language and provides step-by-step guidance for parents. The resource includes visual supports such as a number line and hundreds chart, suggested manipulatives (beads, coins, etc.), and engagement tips like “locking in” the larger number to help children build accuracy and confidence. We also incorporated a QR code for easy access to additional guidance and examples. This project emphasized the importance of meeting families where they are by using accessible language, clear directions, and practical strategies that align with classroom instruction. By providing multiple ways to practice addition, we aimed to help parents support their child’s mathematical thinking while encouraging exploration of strategies that best fit their child’s learning style. Through this experience, I strengthened my understanding of family engagement, mathematical strategy instruction, and the importance of clear communication between educators and caregivers.

AAC Device Research Project
For this project, my classmate and I researched Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices as a form of assistive technology to support students in special education. Our goal was to better understand how AAC devices promote communication, independence, and inclusion for individuals who experience challenges with speech or writing. Through our research, we explored the history and development of AAC devices, the range of low-tech to high-tech options available (such as picture boards, speech-generating devices, and iPad-based communication apps), and how these tools can be individualized to meet diverse student needs. We examined the impact of AAC devices on students, families, and educators, emphasizing how improved communication reduces frustration, strengthens relationships, and increases classroom participation. Our brochure highlights the importance of collaboration among teachers, families, and specialists to ensure successful implementation. We also analyzed research-based evidence demonstrating how AAC devices support inclusive education by empowering students to express their thoughts, needs, and ideas more effectively. This project deepened my understanding of assistive technology, differentiated instruction, and the critical role communication plays in student independence and academic success. It reinforced the importance of advocating for tools that promote equity and access for all learners.
