Orchestra
I have played french horn for eight years and continue to do so at Augustana in the Augustana Symphony Orchestra. This has been a new challenge, as I have never played in an ensemble with string instruments. The challenge has encouraged me to grow as a musician and I am proud to be a contributing member of the ensemble. Every year the orchestra puts on a winter concert titled "Christmas at Augustana" and we pair up with all of the choirs and the brass from the Symphonic Band to create a wonderful show for our community.

Community Health Outreach Organization (ACHOO)
I serve as a co-chair for the medical reserve corps branch of ACHOO. We have hosted movies on-campus to share with our Augustana community documentaries of the AIDS epidemic and health clinics serving the underprivileged. We also hosted two classes, First Aid and CPR/AED, both of which are certified by the American Red Cross. The members of this group have also volunteered at a local food pantry and adopted a family this past holiday season.

Gun Violence: Chicago, Illinois
Gun violence has been, and continues to be, a significant problem in Chicago, Illinois. There have been several programs in place that have worked towards improving the level of gun violence. One of the most noticeable being Project Safe Neighborhood, which began in 2001. Part of what makes these programs, and programs similar to it, necessary is that it targets the populations most at-risk of gun violence. By targeting these specific regions of the city, these programs can provide the resources necessary to improve the condition of the city in the long-term, as well as prevent the condition from spreading to other regions. This briefing has found that primarily African-American males, 15-34 years old, who live in high poverty neighborhoods are the most at-risk population of gun violence. This briefing also suggests that the implementation of more programs similar to Project Safe Neighborhood is necessary to decrease gun violence in Chicago.
