Secondary Scheduling is Failing Our Students In Need
[Conference workshop presentation]. 2023 Southern Education Foundation Issues Forum, Charlotte, NC, United States.
Through an interactive facilitation of policy issues, participants will collaboratively dig into why these issues, including dress code, curriculum, teacher shortage, attendance, and more, are a challenge for Black and Latinx students. Facilitators will present their policy solution, a gradual release of high school schedules to move toward a more college-like course matrix, and build small-group and whole-group dialogue to examine how this could support Black and Latinx students to navigate a more personalized educational model to mitigate individualized challenges.

Not Created Equal: An Analysis of North Carolina’s Dress Code Policies
[Poster presentation]. 2023 Annual Cato College of Education Research Symposium, Charlotte, NC, United States.
Black students are over-disciplined in North Carolina public schools. Removing them from class causes them to lose valuable instructional time, and dress code policies contribute to discipline violations which adds to the growing issue of chronic absenteeism. Despite the years of research highlighting the achievement gap and discipline disparities, culturally exclusive and sexist rules are still prevalent in school systems leading to increased rule violations, specifically for Black female students. Through an analysis of the top ten largest counties in North Carolina, data proves a clear bias against female students and minority students in dress code policies, and correlates with discipline data highlighting the overwhelming discipline infractions issues to Black students in these districts. Findings outline a need for more inclusive dress code procedures and recommending state-wide suggestions to limit discriminatory policies in North Carolina schools.
