Kathleen Wakeman, M.S.Ed., Counseling Psychology

Majored in Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program, Health Psychology Concentration
University of Kentucky, Class of 2029
From Louisville, KY
In August of 2019 I began my journey at the University of Kentucky (UK) as a first-generation college student majoring in Psychology. In May 2023 I graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology with honors and continued my education at UK in the College of Education, pursuing a Masters in Counseling Psychology with the goal of advancing into a Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program. During the master's program, I focused on developing my research and clinical skills while completing my practicum and direct clinical hours at the Orofacial Pain (OFP) Clinic at UK. My experience at the OFP Clinic deepened my interest in the intersection of trauma, chronic pain, and psychological health. This strengthened my commitment to pursuing research/clinical care within interdisciplinary health clinics to be a part of thoughtfully tailored patient care. December 2024 I applied to various Clinical Psy Phd programs and in February of 2025 I was honored to receive and accept admission to UK's Clinical Psychology PhD Program. In May 2025 I then graduated summa cum laude with my Master of Education in Counseling Psychology. I am now a first-year student in the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program under the mentorship of Dr. Ian Boggero and his lab. Dr. Boggero's lab has the focus to understand psychological factors that influence chronic orofacial pain (COFP). The current study in the lab is exploring brief psychological treatment interventions for managing COFP. My specific research interests focus on COFP, particularly migraines and other severe headache experiences, and how traumatic experiences such as developmental trauma or sexual assault may influence not only migraine onset but also patients perceptions of trauma-related triggers, coping strategies, treatment response, and experiences across care settings. I am also interested in exploring psychological approaches that support and empower patients in managing migraines and enhancing overall quality of life.
