Ksenia Eldred

Member of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi
The science behind body movements has always been my passion. I became an ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (ACSM EP-C) to develop the best exercise prescription for individuals with medically controlled diseases to improve their body composition, health and quality of life. I earned my masters degree in Kinesiology from George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. My clinical background includes conducting cardiac stress tests to evaluate cardiovascular function, VO2max tests to evaluate how much oxygen the body needs while exercising, Resting Metabolic Rate tests to measure how many calories the body burns during rest, and body composition tests using the DEXA scan and the BOD POD. At the present time, I work as an exercise physiologist at Inova Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center. I believe that happiness starts with health, and health can be achieved through four easy adaptive measures such as a nutritionally balanced diet, adequate physical activity, regular sleep hours, and managing daily stress. No matter how young or old we are, we all can keep our body healthy during each decade of our life. Let's invest in our health today for a brighter future!

Holidays Lights Spread Joy
This holiday season we have the right to feel melancholy and blue from time to time, but we still have the power to create a festive mood and spread holiday cheer to our family and friends. COVID-19 may affect our lives, but it doesn’t have to affect our spirits. If there is still hope for holiday magic and outdoor Christmas lights can spread holiday cheer, all the promises and wishes of the season can still come true for all of us!

Exercise Demonstration: A Sumo Squat with Arnold Press
Compound exercises engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously or combine two exercises into one movement to target even more muscles. A Sumo Squat with Arnold Press is a good example of a compound exercise. It works the lower body muscles such as the glutes, quads, hamstrings, hip flexors, and calves, and the upper body muscles, to include all three sections of deltoids. The Sumo Squat with Arnold Press exercise can be a perfect addition to a full body workout.

Exercise Demonstration: The Dumbbell Plank Row
Most of us sit behind a desk for eight hours, at least five days per week. Being in a seated position for a long time leads to weak and tight muscles, which can cause pain and discomfort. A lower back pain is a common condition. The strong core takes stress of the lower back and prevents a lower back pain. The Dumbbell Plank Row builds a strong core without crunches.

Exercise Demonstration: The Lateral Lunge with Triceps Extension
Many of our day-to-day movements are in one plane of motion: the sagittal plane. Incorporating other planes of movement into our workout will help us to stay mobile and healthy. Lateral lunges train the body to move into frontal plane of motion. It is a nice change which will take the workout to the next level.

Stay Safe and Healthy
This is a very challenging time for the entire world, as we are all suffering from the Coronavirus pandemic. The beginning of the COVID-19 was different for all of us. It seemed far away until it directly impacted our country, states, cities, and our daily life.

Are You Having Merry or Blue Christmas?
This holiday season, my Christmas article was published in the magazine Neighbors of Fairfax Station in the December issue. It is a joy to see my name at the top of the page. It is even more magical to see the power of written words. At some point, these words were just random ideas, but after they were written down, they started to make sense and became an empowering message. I have been blessed with many happy holidays but also have had a few blue ones. These melancholy holidays taught me to appreciate the small things in life and keep hoping for holiday magic. May Your Holiday Season be Merry and Bright!

If You are Tired of Dieting, Try the Way to Wellness
During dieting, the body goes through an undesirable starvation stage but the body is programed to maintain homeostasis and tries to keep the imbalance under control by increasing the hunger level and diminishing the metabolic rate. A variety of hormones and neurotransmitters are involved in the regulation system, as well. When fat levels decrease to a certain level, physiological and psychological mechanisms are activated that encourage a return to the set-point. This is the reason why dieters experience constant hunger pangs, feel agitated, and rely on willpower to follow a diet plan. There is one big problem with dieting: its primary focus is on weight loss and the promotion of a "thin body ideal" as a symbol of happiness, success, and attractiveness. If diets do not work, are there alternatives? The answer is yes. One of the best alternatives is the way to wellness...
