The History of the Sumatran Tiger
Tigers were first recognized as a species by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, since then nine subspecies have been identified (IUCN, 2014). Of these nine subspecies three have already been declared extinct, Panthera tigris bali (Bali tiger), Panthera tigris sondaica (Javan tiger), Panthera tigris virgata (Caspian tiger) (IUCN, 2014). Many other tiger subspecies face the same outcome if nothing is done to help. One of the subspecies most at risk is Panthera tigris sumatrae (Sumatran tiger). In 1929, the Sumatran tiger was named as one of the nine subspecies (Pocock, 1929). There were a couple of different theories on the evolution of the Sumatran tiger. First, it was thought that the Sumatran tiger was a cross between a mainland tiger and a Javan tiger, which are now extinct (Kitchener, 1999). Kitchener’s (1999) research also showed that that the Sumatran tiger may have evolved because a mainland tiger migrated to the island of Sumatra during low sea levels during the last ice age. Mazak and Groves (2006) theorized that the isolation on the island caused the Sumatran tiger to develop all of its unique traits.
