Madeline Kohutka

Majored in Mathematics And Secondary Education
Cedar Crest College, Class of 2021
From Pottsville, PA
I am an 8th grade math teacher at Wind Gap Middle School, having taught Alg. I, Alg. II, and 8th grade Core math. In my four years at Cedar Crest College, I worked part-time with America Reads, an after-school program that allows me to tutor young students, at my college's library as a peer tutor for multiple math courses, and as an instructional assistant to two of my math professors. Helping others has always been a part of my character; I tutored peers in elementary and middle school, as well, and student taught at my former dance studio for five years. In addition to my extra-curriculars, I was inducted into the National Honor Society for two consecutive years in high school and made the Dean's List in college for all 8 semesters. I am also a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honor society at CCC and graduated with honors in May 2021.

Community Justice Panel
Community Justice Panels are made up of individuals looking to help local juveniles who have received misdemeanors with the authorities. These panels allow us to meet with teens to discuss the incident in question, how their decisions can impact their futures, and their responsibilities moving forward. If a teen completes all activities and reflections included in their panel contract drafted after their hearing, all charges against them are dropped.

Two dependent probabilistic chip-collecting games
Alice and Bob take turns to collect chips in the following manner. In each turn, Alice tosses a fair coin, which decides whether she collects a or b chips, where a and b are positive integers. If Alice collects a chips, then Bob collects b chips, and vice versa. We consider two variants of game play that have different rules in determining the winner. Namely, the winner of Game 1 is the first player to collect at least n chips, while the winner of Game 2 is the first player to collect a positive number of chips congruent to 0 modulo n. We fully determine the formula for the winning probabilities of each player in Game 1, and determine the best and worst case scenarios in terms of winning probabilities in Game 2.
