Army and Navy Academy, Class of 2020
From Los Angeles, CA
Military school, JROTC and Camp Pendleton excursions, taught me the best way to be a great leader is to first be a better follower. Varsity cross-country and tennis, music (advanced band), and being a peer counselor and class representative contribute to my academic success and happiness. As a Los Angeles native, I feel at home with diversity. I've had public school education (Melrose Elementary Math/Science/Technology Magnet, Thomas Starr King MS Environmental Studies Magnet, and a semester at STEM of Hollywood) before attending Army and Navy Academy, a private all-boys international military college-prep school. It is where I took Mandarin in a classroom setting. I also found a passion for government/politics, and independence as a boarding student. In situations where others give up --this is not me. For example, I was perceived as an outsider by the Asians in my Company, but after living in Xi'an for 6-weeks last summer as a National Security Language Initiative for Youth finalist (a U.S. State Department program launched in 2006 "to improve Americans' ability to engage with people from around the world"), I gained insight into the Chinese culture, and was nicknamed "Wasian" by the Chinese cadets because I could communicate with them, including in rapid fire! Instant camaraderie developed as I earned their respect. Immersion improved my Mandarin, which began in 2nd grade as a hobby. I learned from private tutors, after-school programs, immersion summer camps, YouTube, and Saturday school. The life-changing Xi'an ambassadorship inspired me to make a contribution on a global basis and serve my county. This also honors my family tradition especially, my great-grandfather who was a 1918 '90-Day Wonder' at the United States Naval Academy.
