This scholarship was established by Robert Metcalf, an attendee of UW-Whitewater in memory of his wife, Christine McLean Metcalf, a UW-W class of 1945 graduate, and their daughter Dale Ann. Dale Ann was a graduate of the University of Texas and employed as an aeronautical engineer at Lockheed Martin International where she was chief engineer on the F-117 stealth fighter. Christine was a lifelong advocate of learning and reading and was active in community affairs as the wife of an Air Force officer. ($2,000)

Recipient of the McLean Family Endowment. This scholarship was established by Julie Saecker Schneider in memory of her mother, Sylvia McLean Saecker, an attendee of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Sylvia was born March 5, 1915 in Constantine, Michigan. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Whitewater where they remained until the departure of the next generation for places throughout the United States. Of the eleven siblings, four attended UW-Whitewater, including Sylvia. Sylvia was an excellent student and excelled in writing and math. Sylvia became a bookkeeper at UW-Madison, a position she held until her retirement in 1980. She was devoted to family, friends, and enjoyed playing bridge and golf. She was a top-notch traditional American cook who enjoyed family dinners and travel. Sylvia McLean Saecker passed away on January 29, 2010, in Madison Wisconsin, her home since the mid-1960s. Participated in a traveling and historical research experience during my freshman year of high school. The trip involved traveling to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mount Vernon, Virginia, New York City, and Washington D.C. Prior to travel, research was done on the local veterans that served in the Civil War, "reconstructing" their lives, and eventually placing flags on their resting places. It was truly a humbling experience.

Investigated the effects of the antibiotic, chlortetracycline, on the growth and development of tadpole shrimp in the laboratory of Dr. Brian O'Neill. Later presented research at the Society for Freshwater Science national conference on May 23rd, 2018. Also began research in the laboratory of Dr. Steven Anderson in the summer of 2019 involving the synthesis and analysis of photoinitiators.

Menards was a great company to work for, but the store needed more hours than I could give as a part-time worker.

The Effects of Chlortetracycline on Tadpole Shrimp (Crustacea: Notostraca)
Testing the effects of varying concentrations of the antibiotic chlortetracycline on tadpole shrimp. This antibiotic is typically given to cattle as growth promoters, and a mere 10% is metabolized by the animals, leaving the remaining 90% to be excreted and exposed to the environment. These "antibiotic run-offs" could affect the plants and animals in surrounding environments in harmful ways.

The first student to participate in this internship. Includes forty hours of volunteering in the emergency department of Fort Memorial Hospital in Fort Atkinson, WI. Volunteering duties include Volunteer duties include stocking patient rooms, cleaning patient rooms, assisting hospital staff as necessary, interacting with patients and family members, and cleaning and stocking other areas of the emergency department. Smart Copolymer Synthesis and Interfacial Tension
Participated in the Research Experience for Undergraduates program at UW-Eau Claire, funded by the National Science Foundation and coordinated by Dr. Thao Yang. Performed research in the laboratory of Dr. Elizabeth Glogowski, focusing on the synthesis of smart copolymers and their physical properties, primarily interfacial tension. Smart copolymers have the ability to change their properties based on their surroundings. They have applications ranging from drug delivery in the human body to helping cleaning oil spills in the environment. The program was 10-weeks and involved attending various seminars, and presenting a poster at Wisconsin Science and Technology Symposium (WSTS).
