Band of Sisters: Gendered Roles for Women Agents in the Strategic Operations Executive During World War II
British society could not contemplate the idea of putting women in dangerous positions before WWII. In 1942 Great Britain’s secret agency, the Strategic Operations Executive, recruited its first women secret agents. The women were trained in guerrilla warfare and were the few women among the Western Allies to serve in combative roles behind enemy lines to establish a web of resistance groups in every European occupied country. Being a woman secret agent working in Nazi-occupied France was no picnic. This paper explores the gendered differences and implementation of strategies agents used in France to avoid being caught by the Gestapo and to ultimately cause chaos for the Nazis.

Indications of Status Within the Victorian Middle Class Home: The Drawing Room
Due to the importance of social status, the home became an object of displaying a family’s wealth and position in society. Entertainment was an important aspect of life in Victorian England; therefore, middle class families invited visitors to their homes for diner, tea, recitals, and other functions. The drawing room was one of the most important rooms of the house because it was one of the few rooms that guests would enter. Due to the standards set forth in manuals and handbooks, the furnishings and decorations in the drawing room became a symbol of wealth and social status which confirmed a middle class family’s respectability in Victorian England.
