The present study thematically analyzed the evolution of BIPOC representation in Golden Age Broadway shows and their revivals seeking to find a correlation between modern societal norms and an increase in more appropriate representation which properly portray different cultures. In three parts, participants (12 performers and students) answered survey questions on how they defined representation and two interviews were conducted from these to provide further information. Each show was analyzed for ethnicity of performers from the first production to the most recent revival on Broadway. In conjunction with this, the scripts of shows were also thematically analyzed for textual appropriateness to see if there was a correlation between the texts presented and what is socially acceptable in present society. It was found that many shows take a eurocentric approach to diverse cultures and perpetuate stereotypes in their original shows. Overall, the findings concluded that physical representation has increased and some shows revised portions of their scripts to be more accurate, however, many texts remain insensitive to specific cultures and ethnic performers are still regulated to racially specific roles. More research should be done on the educational implications of diverse shows in mainstream culture and society.
