Natalie David

Majored in Biology, Minored in Jewish Studies
Muhlenberg College, Class of 2022
From Ambler
My life has been shaped by my Jewish values of tikkun olam and gemilut hasadim: repairing the world and acts of loving-kindness. While it is important to remain present and connected with others through acts of kindness, I also understand the urgency to correct systemic injustices. I am eager to begin the next chapter of my life, bringing my values and experiences to the field of medicine as a physician. As someone who has completed undergraduate research since freshman year, I hope to emphasize clinical specific research in my future career. Scientific exploration does not exist in a vacuum, and all work towards discovery and innovation must work with local communities. I hope to be able to answer questions in medicine and help translate scientific innovation into clinical settings.

Customer Associate at Wawa Inc

I filled customers orders by preparing food and beverages. I helped maintain the cleanliness of the store and oversaw coffee preparation. I assisted customers when they had difficulties with the menu. Something I found interesting was being able to talk to such a wide variety of people. This specific store is located next to a highway exit, meaning we get many truck drivers and general travelers in addition to locals. I liked being able to earn a good days pay with solid work I completed with my own two hands. I learned a lot of patience with customers who were sometimes impatient. I learned how to rely on my coworkers and work as a team during rush hours. I had to focus on performing tasks in a timely manner while also communicating with my customers and coworkers. Through it all, the team remained positive and supportive.

Lessons from the pandemic: Students need support too
Every institution in our higher education system needs to ask themselves what they are doing for their students. College students are the leaders of the future and we cannot afford to allow them to risk their education due to the pandemic. We need to not only hold our administration accountable, but also our local and federal policymakers. This article written by Gabi Solomon and me examines how the COVID-19 pandemic affects our peers at Muhlenberg College, and calls upon Pennsylvania policymakers to ensure that no student is forced to give up their education--their future-- due to unexpected financial crises.

Where Borders and Beliefs Come to Meet
Theresa Cardinal Brown is the director of immigration policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center, and worked for the Department of Homeland Security advisor under the Bush and Obama administrations. Ronny Quevedo is an Ecuadorian immigrant and artist whose work examines the connections between material, sports, and immigration. One would think their ideas would not be able to exist in harmony. When Brown writes, it is factual and objective. To her, immigration policy needs to be reworked to consider the collective safety and economic health of the nation. Her medium exists in statistics that dispel stereotypes about the effects of immigration from the Southern border. Quevedo holds a different viewpoint. Growing up in an immigrant community in the Bronx, Quevedo witnessed how Ecuadorian immigrants struggled, and how sports strengthened their community. He uses an amalgam of industrial supplies and ancient Mesoamerican designs to express both colonialism's erasure of his culture, as well as the modern day effects on immigrants. Together, these topical thinkers help to portray a holistic picture of immigration from the Southern border. There is no unilateral "perfect policy," but that does not mean we cannot strive for progress. Immigration is still the movement of people--people with families, hopes, dreams, and a right to live in safety
