Caregiving & Toddlers
Technology use has become increasingly prevalent in modern society, but its full impact, particularly on young children, remains unclear. While many adults recognize changes in themselves and other adults or older children, the effects on toddlers are less frequently considered. It has been normalized for caregivers to use screens as a form of distraction or entertainment for children, but this practice may have unintended harmful ramifications. Toddlers, children aged one to three, are at a critical stage of development and rely heavily on caregivers to regulate their environment, including screen exposure. This project explores how early and frequent technology use may influence brain development and behavior in young children. Drawing from an array of studies and personal accounts, the research highlights concerning results such as reduced attention spans and difficulties regulating emotions. By examining the implications of delegating important parts of parenting to technology, this work aims to raise awareness about the potential long-term consequences of screen addiction in early childhood and to provide caregivers with support as they implement less screen time.
