Juvenile Justice Specialist II at Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs
Assigned the responsibility for providing services in the areas of rehabilitation of juvenile offenders and protection of the public through clinical and case management activities in the areas of juvenile intake, probation, parole and custodial responsibility for delinquent children and their families. Within an Office of Juvenile Justice facility provides clinical social work services to residents and their families. Employees perform both program delivery and client intervention functions. Within the delinquent’s family and possibly the victim, makes referrals to prevention and support programs as well as activities for sexual assault and other areas of interpersonal violence and victim needs, as well as behavioral health requirements. Member of the Lincoln Coalition, serving as a community liaison which promotes timely information exchange, coordinate collaborative prevention efforts, and establish resource links and community partnerships in conjunction with Systems of Care, that create resources and links to primary and secondary prevention programs, Knowledge, skills and abilities include knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, legislation, policies and procedures as they pertain to the state administration of Juvenile Justice and the investigation of juvenile delinquency; of community resources; of human developmental stages and related dysfunction; of social work theory and practices; of emotional, physical and mental needs of children and families; of sensitivity to cultural diversity; of courtroom terminology and procedures; and of clinical and counseling techniques and treatment of juvenile delinquency. Ability is required to perform crisis intervention; to gather necessary information to determine the needs of the child; to perform casework management; to provide courtroom testimony; to communicate effectively; to develop, evaluate and modify an intervention plan on an ongoing basis; to establish and maintain constructive relationships with children and their families; to help families become and maintain as functional family units; and to work with court and law enforcement entities. Duties include providing 24 hours a day availability for detention screening services as well as Juvenile Court Intake Services. Initiate intake conferences. Make detention recommendations to Judges. Gather information to make appropriate recommendations to District Attorneys concerning the proper course of action regarding juvenile offenders. Assess strengths and needs of juvenile offenders and families. Develop treatment plans to address strengths and needs of juvenile offenders and their families. Ensure the process complies with policy, procedure, and Federal case management guidelines. Testify in court and provide written reports and recommendations to the Court. Serve as an expert witness in juvenile matters before the Court. Monitor treatment plans and comply with rules established by the Court. Provide custodial services and planning for youth placed in the custody of the Office of Juvenile Affairs. Evaluate residents placed in facilities; monitor provider contracts; conduct foster care studies; act as liaison with community resources and liaison with detention centers; act as client advocate; and develop and maintain expertise in specialized areas of treatment. Detention liaison for the Sac and Fox Juvenile Detention Center: Contact each detained juvenile on a weekly basis in person, verify that care meets or exceeds of Oklahoma guidelines, adequate educational services, appropriate timely medical is provided, screen youth grievances as well verify that youth are aware of the grievance process.

Provide direct care and supervision, paraprofessional guidance and counseling by directing daily activities, maintaining order, helping juveniles develop and achieve personal goals. Inspect living quarters to ensure health and safety standards are met, control movement from living quarters for activities and control aggressive and non-aggressive behavior. Knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform duties included knowledge of basic human physical and psychological needs; of basic first aid methods; of the format used in preparing daily progress and behavior reports; of crisis intervention techniques; and of simple health and safety precautions. The ability to interact with juveniles; to follow oral and written instructions; to communicate effectively; and to work with residents of various racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds was required. Skills required to physically deal with escapees and violent or unruly students was also needed. Additionally knowledge of principles and practices of behavior problems associated with dependent or delinquent juveniles; of methods and practices of household management; of health and safety precautions; of group therapy and practices; of environments and events that impact the problems of youth in custody; and of the statutes and agency policies concerning care of residents is needed. An ability to exercise good judgment in the evaluation of situations and in making decisions; and establish and maintain good working relationships with others is imperative.
