Rising Sophomore ceremony celebrates students
CHADRON – Chadron State College hosted its sixth annual Rising Sophomore awards ceremony April 13. The ceremony celebrates current freshmen nominated by CSC faculty, staff, and student peers for outstanding qualities and achievements during their first year. Photos of award winners are in the CSC online gallery. Department Awards, Outstanding Student Each academic department selected a rising sophomore who has proven to be an outstanding student.

Carrillo named April’s Project Strive Student of the Month
CHADRON – Chadron State College student Samantha Carrillo is the Project Strive/TRiO April Student of the Month. Carrillo, a senior of Alliance, Nebraska, said she chose CSC because of its classroom sizes and it was near her home. Carrillo credits small classes to her success because she can communicate better and more frequently with her professors. Carrillo is currently pursuing a Criminal Justice degree with a minor in Legal Studies. After graduating in May, Carrillo plans to attend the University of Nebraska College of Law with the hope of becoming an attorney.

Falcone named March Project Strive Student of the Month
CHADRON – Chadron State College student Vincent Falcone is the Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month. Falcone, a senior from Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, said he chose Chadron State College because of the location of the school. He enjoys the surrounding Black Hills area, state parks, and public land. Falcone is an Interdisciplinary Studies major and a Student Ambassador. Sara Smith, campus visit coordinator, notes Falcone’s work ethic and commitment to Chadron State.

Registration open for The Big Event
CHADRON – Registration opened Wednesday for student and employee volunteers, as well as jobsites for Chadron State College’s ninth annual The Big Event April 17. Volunteers and jobsites can register online. All local businesses, churches, and residents are welcome to apply as jobsites. The Big Event is a student-based, community service day designed to thank the community of Chadron. The CSC tradition started in 2013 with more than 400 volunteers and 15 job sites. The annual event attracts hundreds of CSC volunteers and various jobsites within Chadron and the surrounding area. The Big Event staff are working closely college officials to follow Nebraska State College System COVID-19 guidelines including masks and social distancing to ensure a safe and effective event for all participants. Jefferson named February Project Strive Student of the Month
CHADRON – Chadron State College student Jacob Jefferson is the Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month for February. Jefferson, a senior from Buckeye, Arizona, said he chose Chadron State because of the caring community and its appealing athletic facilities. Jefferson is a Business Administration major with an option in Marketing. After graduation, Jefferson wants to coach basketball and work in the marketing field. His favorite class is Team Sports Activities (HPER 207) because he gets to compete in sports other than basketball.

The Big Event and The Nest to team up
CHADRON – Chadron State College’s The Big Event staff and members of The Nest will be giving away T-shirts, while supplies last, Sunday during CSC’s volleyball match against Colorado Mesa University. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Chicoine Center. The ninth annual The Big Event will be April 17. The Big Event staff will be available to answer questions and inform students, community members, and CSC employees about the one-day service project designed to thank the community. The Big Event began at CSC in 2013 and has provided volunteer efforts at several hundred jobsites. Kent Hall kitchen renovation benefits students
CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Kent Residence Hall recently underwent kitchen renovations. The project, which began after Thanksgiving, was completed Jan. 29. In the spring of 2019, housing staff approached maintenance with possible ways to improve the first floor Kent Hall kitchen space. Initially, only the kitchen cupboards and cabinets were going to be replaced, but after further discussions, the two departments decided the entire first floor kitchen could be renovated. Both Kent hall kitchens, located in the east wing of the first and third floors, received new glass top stoves, which are safer and easier to clean.

Collins named Project Strive Student of the Month
CHADRON – Chadron State College student Shane Collins is the Project Strive/TRiO January Student of the Month. Collins, a sophomore from Prairie City, South Dakota, said he chose Chadron State because of its affordability, small-town feel, and welcoming community. Without the aid of academic and athletic scholarships, Collins believes he would not have been able to attend a four-year college. Collins is a K-8 Elementary Education major and a member of the CSC track team.

Martinez named December Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month
CHADRON – Chadron State College student Cole Martinez is the Project Strive/TRiO December Student of the Month. Martinez, a junior from Ulysses, Nebraska, said he chose Chadron State because of the strong Family and Consumer Science program. Martinez also has alumni connections at CSC and knew the college had a good reputation. Dr. Lorie Hunn, Family and Consumer Science Professor, credits Martinez as a valuable member of the campus community. “Cole is a great individual and very deserving of the Project Strive/Trio Student of the Month. Cole is definitely a go getter. He is always willing to help out where needed and willing to go the extra mile in everything he does,” Hunn said.

CHADRON – Four Chadron State College Health, Physical Education, and Recreation majors have been nominated by faculty for Major of the Year Awards during the 2020 Nebraska Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) Conference. The conference, previously scheduled for early November, has transitioned to an online format. Students nominated in their respective majors were Health Education, Haley Urbatsch of Gillette, Wyo., Physical Education, George Johnson of Rapid City, S.D., Recreation, Sports Management, and Tourism, MaKayla Davidson of Alliance, Neb., and Exercise Science, Biomechanics, and Kinesiology, Chandler Hageman of Chadron.

Food pantry opens Monday
CHADRON – Chadron State College’s second food pantry of the academic year will be Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Student Center information desk. The food pantry, targeted to increase awareness to food insecurity and help food insecure students, is provided by Shepherd’s Pantry at Immanuel Lutheran Church and CSC’s Student Senate.

UPDATE Oct. 24, 2020: Chinaza Nwosa has transferred the ownership of her company to her mother. CHADRON – Chinaza Nwosa, a Chadron State College alumna and current graduate student from Lagos, Nigeria, recently created a cosmetic company, Peridot Beauty, that she said she hopes will boost the confidence, eloquence, and glamour of all women.

Omondi, a senior from Kisumu, Kenya, said he chose CSC because he had planned to play sports but later decided to focus on his education. 2020 Theatre season opens with musical comedy
CHADRON – The Chadron State College Theatre department will open its 2020 season with the musical comedy, “I Love You, You’re Perfect. Now Change.” The musical, directed by Interim Director of Theatrical Performance Jennifer Poarch, is free and the public is invited to attend. “I Love You, You’re Perfect. Now Change,” will debut Oct. 1 at Memorial Hall. Performances are scheduled for Oct. 1-3 at 7:30 p.m., and a 2 p.m. matinee Oct. 4.

CSC fall music performance schedule announced
CHADRON – The Chadron State College Music department has several performances scheduled this semester. All events are free and the public is invited, however attendees are required to wear masks and practice social distancing. The first fall semester events in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center Chicoine Atrium will be streamed live on CSC Live. Chadron State College has announced the names of 571 students who qualified for the institution’s Spring 2020 academic honors lists. The President’s List consists of 306 students with a 4.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Another 268 students met requirements for the Dean’s List by earning at least a 3.5 grade point average. To qualify, students must be enrolled in 12 credit hours of coursework, be seeking their first bachelor’s degree, and have no incomplete grades during the semester. Pop-up food pantries increase awareness about food insecurity
CHADRON – Chadron State College strives to be known for its generosity, hospitality, and care for students. This spring’s pop-up food pantries are an example of how CSC supports students. The February and April pop-up food pantries on CSC’s campus stemmed from the Oxfam Hunger Banquet hosted by students in the Event Planning and Leadership class the last five years.

CSC hosts first virtual Western District History Day
CHADRON – High school and middle school students from Chadron, Crawford, and Sioux County participated in the first virtual Western District History Day Friday, March 20. The change from an in-person competition was necessary due to the COVID-19 pandemic that forced Panhandle schools to close, according to event organizers Kate Pope and Moni Hourt. Pope said she was happy to adjust to a virtual event. “I know how hard the students worked on their projects and I wanted them to have a chance to make it to the state contest. I am also grateful to all the judges for adapting to this new format on short notice,” Pope said.

Thirty-three chosen for RHOP
CHADRON – Twenty-four Nebraska high school students have been selected as participants in the Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP) at Chadron State College. Additionally, nine high school students were selected as alternates. According to Director of Health Professions Kristal Kuhnel, one interviewer from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) said this year’s interview pool is the strongest in their 18 years of involvement with RHOP.

Sandoz Center requesting WWII items
CHADRON-The Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center is seeking public contributions for its upcoming show “Soldiering into Victory: 75th Anniversary of World War II Ending.” The exhibit will be on display from April 8 to May 30. The Sandoz Center is requesting copies of photographs of local men and women in uniform who served in WWII and copies of letters they sent home.

Regional high school students honored at High Plains Festival
CHADRON – About 70 students from Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota attended the 49th annual High Plains Band and Choir Festival Feb. 1-2. at Chadron State College. Students performed as part of the Honor Choir, directed by Dr. Joel Schreuder, the Guitar Ensemble, directed by Dr. Mckay Tebbs, the Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dr. Rick Puzzo, and the Woodwind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Michael Stephens. Event coordinator Bobby Pace, CSC accompanist, said even though the college was not able to invite all students who qualified because of COVID-19 precautions, it is still an honor for all those selected based on successful auditions.
