Staff Writer (2012-2013): Responsible for writing articles, in-depths, columns,
reviews and briefs. Also takes photos and assists other staff members with the paper.
Lifestyle Section Editor (2013-2014): Responsible for coaching all articles
and assisting the Managing Editor. Also writes articles, in-depths, columns, reviews
and briefs. Assists managing editor with setting up all photoshoots and other fashion spreads.
Lifestyle Managing Editor (2014-2015): Responsible for overseeing all
layouts, budgeting stories, coaching articles, organizing weekly meetings for section
and attending Editorial Board meetings. Writes articles, in-depths, columns, reviews, briefs and performs layout design. Works with section editors to set up photoshoot/fashion spreads for each issue.
Program Skills
Indesign: Layouts and infographics.
Photoshop: Editing and cutting out photos.
AP Style: Proficient in AP Style and can copy-edit accordingly.
Awards Received
2014 National JEA/NSPA Best In Show Award: The first issue of Spark News Magazine for 2014-15 school year that I collaborated on with other staff members won the Best In Show Award.
2014 JEA Write-Off Award of Excellence: Attended the 2014 National JEA/ NSPA Journalism Convention in Washington D.C. and out of 2,168 participants, won the level of Excellent for the review write-off contest.
2013 Quill & Scroll Membership Award: Awarded by Quill and Scroll, an international high school journalism honor society that recognizes and encourages both individual and group achievements in scholastic journalism.
2015 OSMA Superior Award in In-depth/Team Reporting: Received by the Ohio Scholastic Media Association for superior reporting and writing skills in in-depth and team reporting.
2015 National Winner of Quill & Scroll Superior Award in In-depth/Team Reporting: Was declared a National Winner in the Quill & Scroll 2015 International Writing and Photo Contest. The winning entry in the In-Depth/Team Reporting category centered on my work in this years LGBT package. This award made me eligible for Quill & Scroll scholarships up to $1500.
2013 JEA Pacemaker Award: Awarded to the Spark and its members for excellence in American student journalism on a national level.
2014 JEA Pacemaker Award Finalist: The Spark was named a finalist for this award as well as the runner-up.
2013, 2014, 2015 CSPA Gold Crown Awards: Administered to publications that exceed the Columbia Student Press Associations (CSPA) standards for American student journalism. The Spark has been a recipient of this award for the past 22 consecutive years.
Workshops Attended
2012/2013 Southern Interscholastic Press Association Workshop (SIPA): A weekend-long affair in South Carolina consisting of hands-on experience in photography, design and interviewing skills. One of the projects assigned for students was similar to the Humans of New York project and required us to interview local strangers and feature one of their quotes with a photograph taken of them.
Ohio Scholastic Media Association Workshops (OSMA): An annual workshop located in Kent, Ohio. Attended for years 2012-2015.
2014 JEA/NSPA Workshop: Attended with our 88 member staff in Washington D.C. for numerous journalism classes and speakers, some of which were journalists from news outlets such as ESPN, CNN and FOX. We were named a Pacemaker Finalist here.
2015 NSPA Columbia University Workshop: Went to New York City with four of the Sparks other managing editors to attend classes on topics ranging from Law & Ethics to Advanced Reporting and Design. Together, we attended the award ceremony for the 2015 CSPA Gold Crown Award, which the Spark won for the 22nd consecutive time.
Otterbein University Journalism Workshops: An annual workshop located at Otterbein University. Attended for years 2012/2013 and 2013/2014.
