Robert O'Dell III

Majored in History / Secondary Education
Roger Williams University, Class of 2020
From Seekonk, MA
I am a hard working and dedicated scholar who aspires to become a leading academic in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) focusing on the History of Technology and Techno-ethics. My goal is to become a Technological and Scientific Historian, Ethicist, and a pioneer in the use of retrospective analysis, applied fields in the humanities, and technological history as a medium to better understand and solve the problems and ethical quandaries that society faces from rapid scientific and technological growth in the twenty-first century. I am a proponent for educating the next generation of ethical innovators, through outreach, scholarship, and innovative collegiate courses fostering interdisciplinary cooperation and farsighted moral and ethical decision-making. During my graduate studies, I would like to pursue topics in the ethical development, creation, and use of technologies, the long-term unintended consequences that engineering and scientific decision-making can have on society, and more broadly, the impact that industrial growth and technological development has on humanity and the environment throughout the historical past and the present. I would also like to study the societal challenges and implications of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, the role of policy, governmental factors, regulation, and incentive (throughout history) on encouraging or hindering innovation, and the relationship between science and religion in a world shaped by rapid and unforeseen change.

This included an extensive search for his scattered correspondence still privately held, research into the history of Chemistry, Rhode Island Manufacturing, Rumford Baking Powder, and the local and international Chemicals industry. In addition led efforts to digitize, OCR (Optical Character Recognition), and catalog all of the correspondence. Managed data and utilized digital scanning technology.

June 2014 - August 2017
Projects/Accomplishments - Preceding RWU
I started archival research on the history of postal networks and technologies when I was twelve years old. By fourteen, I acquired, assessed, catalogued, and digitized a small archive of letters from the Rumford Chemical Works and started giving lectures on technological history at venues such as the Rhode Island Post Card Club (Postcard Patents and Manufacture) and the East Providence Historical Society (East Providence Industry). At the age of sixteen, I took an interest in developing a detailed knowledge of historical patent and intellectual property research methods.

Projects/Accomplishments - During RWU (Part 1-History)
I have participated in numerous projects relating to technological and industrial history. A few notable highlights are as follows: During my time spent at RWU, I have discovered the founding document of the American Postal System, uncovered evidence that predates the supposed origin of several inventions, acquired and preserved the Pitney Bowes Slogan Proof Archive (an archive of records relating to the art, manufacture, and design of U.S. government commissioned postmark propaganda in the 1950s), was a guest lecturer at The Ripley Academy in the United Kingdom (via Skype), and worked with the Rhode Island Foundation Women’s Fund to research and record female labor history in Rhode Island. I have presented a paper at the Phi Alpha Theta New England 2019 Regional Conference at Salem State University on the myth of the self-made man in corporate and technological history. I have worked under Dr. Debra Mulligan, a 19th and 20th Century American and East Asian Historian, who has advised me during the writing of my thesis, which has earned the Roger Williams University Thesis with Distinction Award.

Projects/Accomplishments - During RWU (Part 2-Education)
I have participated in numerous projects relating to education. A few notable highlights are as follows: During my time at RWU, I observed and taught social studies at an urban high school, engaged with the Microsoft Educator Community, and wrote unit plan curriculum and lesson plans for high school social studies. This included lessons integrating technological history, ethics, and inquiry- based instructional models in my lessons. I also lectured (via Skype) at The Ripley Academy in the United Kingdom and worked under Dr. Alan Canestrari, a distinguished scholar of inquiry-based pedagogy and social studies education. I foster a classroom (or lecture) environment that inspires students (or participants) to participate in inquire, open discussion/thought, and intellectual discovery. Every learner socially constructs their understanding of the world, thus inquiry-based approaches, and critical thinking must be fostered. (CONTINUED)

Projects/Accomplishments - During RWU (Part 3 -STS Education / My Philosophy)
My philosophy as both an educator and a future academic in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) has always been that students need to understand the direct application and importance of the material being taught to their own lives and careers and that everything I teach should be focused towards the current and future needs of my students. I first envisioned a different approach to the role that the humanities should play in supporting and encouraging innovation at the age of 19. The role of the humanities is often passive rather than active/applied, and through my graduate school research, I envision making the humanities more relevant to the needs of tomorrow to teach a new generation of well-rounded and ethical innovators, engineers, and scientists. I believe that it is my role in life to help teach this next generation of innovators to be the ethical, socially responsible, far-sighted, independent thinkers that the world needs now.
